“Connectingpeoplearoundtheworldwithnature,whetherinpersonorinthisvirtualsetting,isacornerstoneofourmissiontoconserveandprotectgiantpandasforfuturegenerations,”saidSteveMonfort,JohnandAdrienneMarsDirectoroftheSmithsonian’sNationalZooandConservationBiologyInstitute.“Likemanywhohavefollowedourgiantpandacubsincehisbirthlastsummer,ItuneintotheGiantPandaCamfromtimetotime.WatchingXiaoQiJialwaysputsasmileonmyface.Wearegratefulthatthosewhoshareinourjoyhavehelpeduspicktheperfectnameforourpandacub.”

XiaoQiJiwasbornattheDavidM.RubensteinFamilyGiantPandaHabitatAug.21,at6:35p.m.tomotherMeiXiang(may-SHONG)andfatherTianTian(tee-YENtee-YEN).HisbirthwasstreamedliveontheZoo’sGiantPandaCam,andsincethenmorethan1.5millionvirtualvisitorshavetunedintowatchhimgrow.GiantpandafanscanseeXiaoQiJi,MeiXiangandTianTianviatheGiantPandaCam,oneoffiveliveanimalwebcamshostedontheZoo’swebsite.TheZoowillcontinuetoprovideupdatesonXiaoQiJionitswebsite,onsocialmediausingthehashtags#PandaStoryand#PandaCubdatesandintheGiantPandae-newsletter.
